On July 6, 2014 at approximately 7:00 am, Wally GIESBRECHT of Elrose, SK left a local hotel on the 16 Highway bypass in North Battleford to go for a walk. GIESBRECHT inquired with hotel staff about the walking bridges that go over the North Saskatchewan River and the walking paths on Finlayson Island. When he didn't reutrn to the hotel his family went and searched for him. Going for walks is a common practice for him, however, it is not common for him to be gone for this length of time.
At 10:00 am, North Battleford RCMP were called to assist with searching for GIESBRECHT. North Battleford Fire Department deployed their boat into the river and along with the RCMP conducted an extensive search of the North Saskatchewan River, the shore line and Finlayson Island.
